Our physicians are on the cutting edge of new research providing specialized treatment for your medical condition. Florida Urology Center has the most knowledgeable staff with the best resources and equipment available.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
IMRT revolutionized the delivery of radiation therapy and for many patients it’s an ideal treatment. IMRT capitalizes on the basic concept of radiation therapy but takes it one step further, delivering the radiation to the specific areas at risk while significantly reducing the radiation dose to normal tissue.

How It Works
Intensity modulated radiation therapy uses computer controlled x-ray accelerators to shape radiation beams to closely approximate the shape of the tumor. The normal tissue is exposed to less radiation so the IMRT approach allows higher, more precise and effective radiation doses to safely be delivered to tumors with fewer side effects compared with conventional techniques. IMRT is a curative cancer treatment.

Advantages of IMRT
• Increased chance of destroying cancer cells
• Precise radiation distribution
• Decreased radiation to normal sensitive surrounding tissue
• Decreased chance of harming normal cells
• Higher radiation dosage to cancer cells

Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)
IGRT, another treatment to direct radiation precisely to the tumor, uses images taken immediately before treatment. This reduces the risk of tumors shifting days before the procedure and spares surrounding tissue from radiation.

How it Works
IGRT inserts tiny pure gold markers into the prostate to provide visible landmarks for tumor location. Placing of the markers is fast and relatively painless. The heightened accuracy allows for a more precise radiation dose and a more targeted area for treatment of the tumor.

Advantages of IGRT
• Increased chance of destroying cancer cells
• Precise radiation distribution
• Decreased radiation to normal sensitive surrounding tissue
• Decreased chance of harming normal cells
• Higher radiation dosage to cancer cells
