• Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) - TURP is the most common BPH surgery, which uses a scope to scrape obstructing prostate tissue out of the way. This procedure has been associated with excessive bleeding and the risk of erectile dysfunction.
• Greenlight Laser Prostatectomy (PVP) - An outpatient procedure, the Greenlight Laser Prostatectomy (PVP), uses a laser to remove obstructing tissue with little to no blood loss. BPH Surgery Recovery Time

Traditional Enlarged Prostate Surgery Recovery Time: 

The recovery time for traditional BPH surgeries such as TURP is typically a little longer than other types of BPH procedures. 

• You will spend 1 to 3 days in the hospital after the surgery
• You will spend 3 to 6 weeks resting with no strenuous activity
• You may feel tired for up to 2 weeks after surgery

Prostate Laser Surgery Recovery Time:  

The recovery time for laser BPH surgery such as Greenlight Laser Prostatectomy is much shorter than the recovery time for traditional BPH procedures.

• Because it is an outpatient procedure you will most likely spend no nights in the hospital
• Normal activities can begin a few days after surgery
• Strenuous activities can begin 2 weeks after surgery

BPH Surgery Side Effects

Traditional Enlarged Prostate Surgery Side Effects: 

When it comes to traditional BPH surgery, you will typically see more side effects than laser BPH surgery. Some side effects may include:

• You may see some blood in the urine for up to 2 weeks after surgery.
• You will have a higher risk of ED compared to other types of BPH surgery  
• A low chance for urethral stricture 
• A low chance for urinary incontinence

Prostate Laser Surgery Side Effects: 

Patients who undergo laser BPH surgery typically have fewer side effects than those who have traditional surgery. Some side effects may include:

• A slight burning feeling while urinating may be felt for up to a week
• Trouble urinating for up to a week
• A very little chance for urethral strictures
• A very little chance for urinary incontinence
